A learning studio for advanced (master's level) students. The studio includes lectures and an extensive group work. The lecturers introduce factual experiences from international projects, research methods and challenges in the field of development and sustainable urban planning.

The lectures and workshops introduce students to international project work including project design, management, scheduling, finance and reporting, dynamics of group work, research ethics and methods.

In the actual group work the students will participate in real projects within research groups or organizations / companies. The group work themes reflect the changing topics of Yhd-12.3086: this year different fields of sustainable urban planning. Group work is mentored by TKK Ph.D students, practising professionals and master's students in their final stage.

In this module - the three topic areas covered are:
1. UN-HABITAT; Risk and Disaster Management; Tsunami reconstruction evaluation in Banda Aceh Indonesia
2. SHALIN Suomi ry: Designing participatory tools for sustainable development
3. SHALIN Suomi ry: Renewable Energy for Sustainable Communities and Universal Ecology

Participatory techniques range from production of communication materials and simple workshop sessions through to more complex
methods of decision-making, planning, landscaping and visualising. They can be very useful ways of concentrating efforts to involve people. Participation takes time, and techniques will usually need to be part of a long-term programme, or related to a structure.

Objective: To design and develop participatory visualising tools with local communities or groups to enhance their planning
processes, and improve their overall contribution and their integration into the development policies especially those related to forestry, land use and natural resources management.
Tsunami reconstruction evaluation in Banda Aceh Indonesia. This course evaluates the impact of Finish Development Cooperation in this region. The different modes of participation of the partners in this cooperation is reviewed and analysed.
One of the biggest threats to biodiversity and integrity of ecosystems is the increasing demand and quest for energy. This is especially acute in places where groups or communities rely directly on the natural resources (biomass) for their fuel needs. This has a negative impact on biodiversity. Objective: To design and develop low cost off grid energy supply system for local communities and build the capacity of local artisans in technical and general maintenance of the systems. Explore the existing sustainable and renewable energy options with emphasis on the local context and in consideration of the global context plus undertake a sustainability impact assessment of the proposed system. Working close and together with Kenyan partners.
This course follows specific projects that use mapping as a tool for resource management.
GISEEM- is a project that investigates the role of mapping and ecological knowledge in forestry management.

End of Time! SGT
by Kenya Wiki - Sunday, 11 May 2008, 05:17 PM
It looks like we have finally come to the end of time. Precisely, end of SGT!

Having read all the blog entries, one thing that has remained nagging at the back of my mind is the third person interpretation of issues. I think it is quite natural for people to view things and issues as "an eagle would" up in the sky.

I would have loved to hear the deeper voices of the dissent, outrage, anger, fear, and ultimately.. hope!

This I feel has still not been expressed by most of you. This space is for you as the future decision makers to do exactly that! Decide! Give the future a direction! Give the future a voice!

I hope the last presentation will answer my prayers!!

Confirming Projects that you are enrolled:
by Kenya Wiki - Monday, 28 January 2008, 11:08 PM
Dear All, Thank you for that wonderful session and your overall contribution to the systems analysis. This goes a long way in strengthening the project(s) evolution and development. It seems that all the projects will have a session on Monday, so most likely we will all be meeting again. However, before then, it would be important to have a clear record on which student is partaking in which project. Please confirm this by either by going to your profile and ascertaining that you are enrolled in - -HABITAT -P3DM or -RESCUE

The SGT-Studio is the overall programme that you are all enrolled, but you still need to have projects within the programme which your are specifically going to be working under.

If you are not able to change your status, please do get in touch with me and I will assist you in doing so.

Good day Peter
